Aristocracy Accused of Newborn Death

Former It-Girl and Convicted Felon Face Manslaughter Charges

Constance Marten and Mark Gordon on Trial

A former "It-girl" and member of a prominent English aristocratic family, Constance Marten, 35, and Mark Gordon, 48, are on trial for the manslaughter of their newborn daughter, Victoria. The case has captured widespread attention due to the stark contrast between Marten's privileged upbringing and Gordon's criminal past.

Marten is from a wealthy and influential family, and grew up in a stately home. She was once a regular fixture on London's social scene and was featured in Tatler magazine. In contrast, Gordon was born in Birmingham but grew up in Florida, where he was convicted of attacking and raping a woman in 1982.

The pair met in 2016 and began a relationship. They were reported missing in January 2023 after their car was found on fire in Essex. Police subsequently launched a nationwide search for the couple and their newborn baby, who was born prematurely in January.

The remains of Victoria were discovered in April not far from where the car was discovered. Marten and Gordon were arrested shortly after and charged with manslaughter. The trial is ongoing, and the jury is expected to hear from a range of witnesses, including medical experts and family members.

The case has raised questions about the role of privilege and mental health in criminal cases. Marten has been described by friends as having a "fragile personality," and there is speculation that she may have been vulnerable to Gordon's influence. The outcome of the trial will have a significant impact on both Marten and Gordon's futures, as well as the wider discussion on the intersection of class and crime.
