Zach Arnett Fired as Head Coach of Mississippi State Bulldogs
After a Disappointing 5-6 Season
Mississippi State has fired head football coach Zach Arnett after just one year at the helm. The Bulldogs finished the season with a disappointing 5-6 record, culminating in a 51-10 loss to Texas A&M that proved to be the final straw.
Arnett's Brief Tenure
Arnett, 37, took over as head coach of Mississippi State in December 2022 after spending two seasons as the team's defensive coordinator. He was tasked with rebuilding the program following the unexpected passing of Mike Leach.
Despite the challenges, Arnett was unable to turn things around quickly enough. The Bulldogs struggled offensively and defensively throughout the season, failing to win a single conference game and finishing with the worst record in the SEC West.
Disappointing End to the Season
The loss to Texas A&M proved to be the breaking point for Mississippi State. The Bulldogs were outmatched on both sides of the ball, giving up 570 total yards and scoring just three points in the second half.
After the game, Arnett acknowledged the team's performance was unacceptable and vowed to "make changes" to address the issues. However, it was too little too late, as the Bulldogs had already decided to part ways with their head coach.
Moving Forward
Mississippi State athletic director Zac Selmon announced the firing on Monday, thanking Arnett for his contributions to the program. Selmon said the search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
Arnett, who is now an analyst at Ole Miss, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to coach at Mississippi State and wished the program all the best in the future.
