After Leachs Passing Arnett Takes The Reins

New Head Coach at Mississippi State: Zach Arnett

After Leach's Passing, Arnett Takes the Reins

Zach Arnett, a proven leader within the Mississippi State football program, has been named the Bulldogs' 35th head football coach on an interim basis. Arnett previously served as the team's defensive coordinator under Mike Leach, who passed away in December 2022.

Arnett's Coaching Journey

Arnett, born September 10, 1986, is a native of Starkville, Mississippi. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Middle Tennessee State before joining the Mississippi State staff in 2016. As defensive coordinator, he helped the Bulldogs become one of the top defenses in the Southeastern Conference (SEC).

Taking Over for Leach

Arnett's appointment comes after Mississippi State fired coach Joe Moorhead on November 13, 2023, just 10 games into his first season as Leach's replacement. Moorhead struggled to replicate Leach's success, leading the Bulldogs to a 4-6 record (1-6 SEC) in 2023.

Mississippi State's Commitment to Continuity

By promoting Arnett to head coach, Mississippi State has shown a commitment to continuity following Leach's passing. Arnett is familiar with the program, the players, and the SEC landscape. He is expected to maintain the defensive prowess the Bulldogs were known for under Leach while also implementing his own offensive philosophy.

Arnett will lead the Bulldogs in the upcoming ReliaQuest Bowl. His performance in that game and throughout the 2024 season will provide valuable insights into the future direction of the Mississippi State football program.
